CONTEST GUIDELINES:

  1. Poems can be rhyming or non-rhyming. Poems limited to 20 lines. Prose limited to 250 words.
  2. There is no age requirement. Authors may be anyone who considers himself or herself an elder.
  3. We suggest that you write about real emotions and feelings and keep a special person or event in mind as you write. For example, questions to ponder: What was it all about? Would you do it again? What is your relationship with the world? What do you want to teach someone?
  4. Poems and Prose are judged on the basis of uniqueness, style and message.
  5. English-language entries only. No graphics.
  6. Entries limited to 1 poem or 1 prose per author.
  7. Entries limited to residents of California.

Eligibility and Terms: The Elders Prose and Poetry collection is open to all residents of California, regardless of experience or previous publication, except where prohibited. Each entrant may submit one poem of no more than 20 lines or prose of no more than 250 words, on any subject, and in any form, provided that the content of the poem is not vulgar or offensive, does not employ profanity, and is the original, individual work of the entrant. All submissions become the property of AgeSong Institute and will be considered for publication in a forthcoming anthology and may appear on our website. AgeSong Institute, Barnes & Noble and related entities have the explicit permission to use the submissions for the book, promotions, and other related uses. AgeSong Institute and Barnes & Noble agree to reference the author of all prose and poetry used. AgeSong Institute and Barnes & Noble reserve the right to make reasonable edits to chosen submissions. Entrants retain copyright on his/her own individual work. All entries sent by mail must include completed entry and consent form. All entries sent via website must include completed online entry and consent form. Entrants must complete the entry form its entirety to qualify for the contest and may submit no more than one poem or one prose per contest.

Submission Dates: The Elders Prose and Poetry contest is from June 7, 2010 through November 30, 2010. Entries will not be accepted after November 30, 2010.

Selection: Poems and prose are judged based on originality, message, creativity, and artistic quality. Poems and essays not meeting the requirements for line limitation or word maximum are automatically disqualified. Poems containing profanity, vulgarity or offensive material are automatically disqualified.

Winners: Winning entries will be included in the publication: Gems of Wisdom to be released in May 2011.

Decisions: The panel of volunteer judges will consist of authors and elders. Submissions will be reviewed without reference to authors. All decisions made by the judges are final.

Fees: There are no entry fees for the contest. No fees or prizes awarded to winners. No purchase necessary. No financial obligation to enter or win the contest.

Copyrights: The author retains all copyrights to the submitted poem or prose. Winning poems and essays will appear with the copyright notice intact in the forth coming anthology.

Notification: Winners will be announced on January 14, 2011. Winners are notified by phone or by mail. Names of the winners and their respective poems and essays may appear on websites and other promotional materials.

Privacy Policy: AgeSong Institute collects personal information for the purpose of notifying contest winners. All information submitted is kept in confidence, and used solely for notification purposes and shall not be made public by AgeSong Institute or Barnes & Noble. AgeSong and Barnes & Noble do not lease, lend, sell, or share personal information collected. Minor children must have parental permission to enter the contest.
